HIV Testing Program
PROGRAM GOAL:
The goal of YAP's HIV testing program is to reduce illness and death by promoting the early identification and treatment of HIV infection.
HIV testing is a free service of the Youth and AIDS Projects.
HIV Risk Assessment
Our specific objectives are to:
1) Make HIV antibody counseling and testing easily available.
2) Link HIV+ youth with existing systems of care after diagnosis.
What are the testing procedures?
- » Our staff will explain the process and ask permission before testing.
- » Complete a questionnaire with a case manager to determine your specific level of risk.
- » We only use the OraSure (oral) test kit that is 99.8% accurate. Testing is done a swab in the mouth and doesn't involve blood or needle sticks.
- » You will receive a testing code. This is a unique identifier known only to you, to ensure confidentiality. For security purposes, only clients with a unique identifier can get results, as is standard practice in many testing facilities.
- » A case manager at YAP will provide results and post-test counseling during normal business hours.
- » Clients can receive results in person or by telephone. Results take approximately a week.
This program is open to anyone 25 years of age or younger who has had unprotected sex or shared needles. To schedule an appointment, please contact Val Smith.
